What is Living Traditions?

We are a not-for-profit traditional arts organization dedicated to promoting innovative methods of maintaining continuity in the transmission of Yiddish folk culture from generation to generation.

What does Living Traditions do?

Our main job is the planning, programming and running “KlezKamp: The Yiddish Folk Arts Program,” our flagship event, now in its 22nd year.

What else do you do?

In addition to running KlezKamp, we've issued recordings such as the children's CD "Di Grine Katshke" and sponsored Yiddish concerts in conjunction with New York's Hebrew Union College. In Spring 2002, Living Traditions and MacArthur Fellow David Isay co-produced the Yiddish Radio Project, a ten-part documentary for National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," which won the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for Excellence in Electronic Journalism. See our Projects page for details of our other forthcoming projects.

What does my membership go to pay for?

Memberships help cover the running of Living Traditions (rent, telephone, utilities, staff salaries, etc.) though the costs of running the organization far exceed the income produced by membership fees.

How else does Living Traditions make money to survive?

In addition to revenues generated by KlezKamp and Living Traditions memberships, the bulk of the monies that sustain us come in the form of gifts (from generous folks like you), endowments and foundation grants.
